Is Alcohol And Cocaine Use Harmful To The Baby During Pregnancy?

I just realized I may be 2 weeks pregnant and am worried about the way I partied at a friend s birthday party on Saturday - heavy drinking and cocaine use - stayed up all night. Is it too early to be a concern? LMP was April 23. Today is March 14. Too early to test but if I am pregnant do I need to worry about the safety of the baby? Thank you.

Hello and I hope I can help you today.

The impact of alcohol and drugs in pregnancy is most significant during the first trimester, which is the beginning of the time the fetal brain begins to grow. If there was damage to a pregnancy when it was just conceived and not yet implanted, it would most likely have no effect or just prevent the pregnancy from developing in the first place.

So if you find out that you conceived during that particular time, there is a great chance that everything will be fine provided that the fetus isn't exposed more to toxic substances, especially heavy alcohol use, during the first trimester.

I hope this adequately answers your question and that this information was helpful. Best wishes, Dr. Brown
