Is Alcohol Causing Swelling In Abdomen, Feet And Ankles?
My husband has been an alcoholic for 50 years. His stomach stays swollen. His feet and ankles swell also. He has dark, foul smelling urine. He sleeps in his chair about 50% of each day. He went to rehab in June, but has started drinking again. So far he has tried to control his intake, but I know where he is headed. He says he has no pain in his stomach.
Alcohol affects almost every part of body. Liver is maximally affected. Liver doesn't work properly which leads to swelling of abdomen due to collection of fluid in abdominal cavity. Swelling of feet and ankle is due to lowering of proteins in blood due to liver dysfunction. Dark and foul smelling urine is also the result of liver impairment. Excessive sleepiness is due to hepatic encephalopathy.
