Is Alcohol Consumption Safe While On Atenolol?

mY BROTHER is an alcoholic and takes blood pressure medication he was just told that his kidneys are not doing well however I do not know the whole story yet the doctor told him to stop taking the medication asap. I am also on atenolol and I thought my doctor told me not to drink on the medication I do not drink at all. my brother and mother continue to say it has nothing to do with the booze? My dad was also an alcoholc. I stopped drinking when it became a problem for me years ago. I am just a little confused .

There isn't a strong reason not to drink on atenolol. But the alcohol changes the level of stress hormones and atenolol works by blocking their action. If they amount of them increases (like with even mild alcohol withdrawal) then the drug doesn't work well at all. This varies a lot with different people but generally, fairly high levels of alcohol will make the medicine not work well.
