Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is alcohol contraindicated for quetiapine? My stepmother started this medication 5 days ago. I see a change in her level of hostility, confusion, forgetfulness and ability to do normal daytime functions. She has Alzheimer s disease and was prescribed this in addition to Amenda. Seems to me she is getting worse, is meaner, argumentative and suspicious.
hi, Welcome to HCM The complaints that she is showing is a part of the underlying psychiatric condition, for which the medicine quetiapine is been prescribed. Its very important for you to understand, that any psychiatric medication requires roughly around 15 days for its effects to appear. Besides, certain psychiatric disorders are characterised by chronic thought problems and delusions, which poorly responds to medications and are difficult to treat. Patience by the family members is very vital in the prognosis of any psychiatric disorder, which is expected from you in this case. Quetiapine is the antipsychotic drug of choice in parkinson disease. therefore very correctly prescribed by your treating psychiatrist. Alcohol is not a contraindication to quetiapine, but alcohol may reduce the efficacy of quetiapine, or for that matter any other drug. A small quantity drink shouldn't be a problem, however a serious alcohol use disorder needs to be managed by expert.
hope to have satisfied your query. welcome for further suggestions. Regards, Dr Pankaj Borade
