Is An Elevated Heart Rate For A Few Minutes After Cardio Workout A Concerning Matter?

Hello: I am a 69 year old female who attends weekly zumba classes. Last week after class my heart rate remained at 140 for 45 minutes after class ended. Is this something that should concern me? I have recently seen my cardiologist for an annual. No heart problems other than a murmur.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is normal due to sympathetic stimulation while doing cardio. But an exertion and increased heart rate need increased blood and oxygen supply to the heart.

In the elderly, the cardiorespiratory reserve is less so it might be dangerous.

Do it supervised and as per instructions of your cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
