Is An Insect Bite On Ankle Of A Child Curable With Neosporin And Benadryl?
2 year old has some sort of insect bite on foot near ankle. I treated it with neosporin first. She got it last night in her room and now today it is red itchy swollen and warm to the touch. Benadryl didn t really help. Is there anything else I should do and what could possibly have caused this?
Hi there. It is not immediately clear if this 2 year old is your child & how accurate this information of an insect bite is. If indeed it is an insect bite, then may I suggest application of a cream containing a mid-potency steroid coupled with an antibiotic like Fusidic acid to combat any secondary infection. Fucibet or Fucicort are trade names of creams that I allude to. Your application of Neosporin may in fact have worsened the condition & caused an irritant or allergic contact dermatitis as Neosporim has been documented to be one of the most notorious allergens. Benadryl or an antihistamine will only add as an 'adjunct ' therapy & any antihistamine like cetirizine may be a better alternative. Good luck & do hope it clears soon & the child's leg is OK in no time! Dr Praveen Rodrigues MD
