Is Appendicitis Related With Stomach Pain And Low Appetite?

My 5 year old son has a mild fever accompanied by a tummy ache localized around the belly button only. He does not have much of an appetite. Could this be an early sign of appendicitis or a possible mild food poisoning since we did eat out at a restaurant last night?
