Is Bleeding And Frequent Urination Common When Suffering From UTI?

89 year old good health, on 75mg. tablet taken daily.....Started heavy bleedingb with dark clots after urinating..Went to doctor. Prescribed Bactrim twice daily. Have taken two doses..Got up in middle of night to urinate, bleeding heavily again...Is this normal with a urinary infection ? or should I call the doctor again? Have no back pain or pain with urination.

Thank you for the query.
As per the history, you are 89 yrs old (gender not mentioned) on some medications (strength mentioned to be 75 mg - so probably it may be aspirin or clopidogrel), presently have frequent urination and hematuria (blood in urine). You have also been prescribed, Bactrim (cotrimoxazole).
Frequent urination and hematuria can both be due to urinary tract infection (UTI). It is important to find out the cause of your UTI. Please do get your blood sugar profile checked, since diabetes is an important cause of UTI.
In male sujects, prostatomegaly, is an important cause of UTI. An ultrasonography of the kidney-ureter-bladder can be done. Apart from detecting prostatomegaly, it can also help in detection of ureter/bladder stones or any bladder pathology, which can cause these symptoms. A residual urinary volume done along with the USG can also help out.
Since, you haven't mentioned the tablet you are taking, I can just assume from the strength (i.e.75 mg), that it may be aspirin or clopidogrel, both of which can aggravate the bleeding.
I would suggest you to visit your doctor again, since further investigations are required, and a change of antibiotics may be needed.
Hope this helps you out.

Dr. Ayusmati Thakur
