Hi my sister has cauda equina I'm wondering if it is hereditary as I have suffered for years with disc problems and it is gradually getting worse so I were wondering if it is all related. My brother has fibrosis of the spine also it's just strange how we all suffer with the spine. Thank you xx
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Cauda equina syndrome affects the nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord. The nerve roots are compressed(most often by a herniated disc)cutting off sensation and movement. The nerve roots that control bladder/bowel function are especially at risk of damage. If immediate treatment to relieve pressure is not given, permanent paralysis can result. Cauda equina syndrome is not inherited.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Arnold Zedd, MD, FAAP
