Is Childbirth Possible With Tricuspid Insufficiency?
I am 33 years old and just recently underwent open heart surgery to repair a hole in my heart that I was born with. I am doing great but I still have tricuspid insufficiency and I want to know if I can have a child with this disorder. I am getting married next month.
Pregnancy does occur in women with heart disease but it can be a complicated affair at times. Women tend to tolerate insufficiency better than stenosis.
I suggest that you get your cardiac status evaluated and look for the ejection fraction and size of various chambers. If the fraction is good and there is no chamber enlargement, then pregnancy is possible. The chances of developing heart failure are always there during pregnancy in women with heart disease as it imposes a greater demand on the heart. So please keep this in mind while planning for pregnancy. You will need to work closely with your cardiologist as well as obstetrician during the entire pregnancy.
Also more than one pregancy is not recommended. So if things are alright then you may attempt it once. All my best wishes are with you. Take care.
