Is Colonoscopy Required After Minor Experiences With Bright Red Blood From Rectum And Bloody Stool ?
Hi, I had a couple minor experiences with bright red blood from my rectum, both times, very minimal, and months apart. I recently had an experience with a bloody stool that was maroon in color, which last a few minutes. My doctor wants me to get a colonoscopy, but when researching, I read that I should see a doctor if symptoms persist for 2-3 weeks. I am 48 years old with no colon cancel in my family history. Should I get a colonoscopy or should I wait to see if symptoms of bleeding persist? So far a blood y stool is my only symptom. Thank you ~ Sherri
Before you go for a colonoscopy you should be evaluated by a surgeon and a per rectal examination needs to be done first, and then if there seems to be an indication, then a proctoscopy should be done thereafter. Most of the causes of bright bleeding per rectum are diagnosed by these procedures, and then if your doctor still insists on a colonoscopy, then you should go ahead with it.
As far as your symptomatology is concerned most likely you have a fissure in the anus which usually causes pain itch and bleeding at the time of defecation. You should try sitz bath with betadine twice daily along with the local application of dobesilate cream locally, and try some still softener to avoid constipation (sodium picosulfate syrup). It will definitely help you.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
