Is Dehydration The Reason For Sudden Memory Loss?

My mom is having some memory loss suddenly. I m talking Wednesday night she was fine and Thursday morning should couldn t remember a LOT of stuff from the last couple of months. She was in the cleanse phase of a diet she was on and she had really bad diarrhea Wednesday night. Is this just dehydration or should we be more concerned and take her to the ER? If its dehydration, will symptoms reverse? How long does in take?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Severe dehydration can cause secondary electrolyte disturbances in terms of low levels of potassium and magnesium which are known for the sudden memory loss, but it is reversible with the correction of the underlying cause. Take care and wish your mom a great recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
