Is Diarrhea A Temporary Side Effect Of Omeprazole?

Hi I just started taking Omprazole for GERD . Been about 4 days. I’m experiencing diarrhea and cramping in my gi track. Mild and usually happens after lunch. Are thes symptoms going to be recurrent all the time I’m using this drug or is it a temporary side effect?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Omeprazole doesn't cause diarrhea. On prolonged use it can cause a condition called achlorhydria and may result in abdominal discomfort but loose stool is rare. It could be due to something else and may be due to minor gastritis, generally it will resolve in few days and if it persist consult a physician and get evaluated.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
