Is Dizziness A Matter Of Concern While Suffering From Hydrocephalus?
I have had a shunt for 52 years because I was born with hydrocephalus, is it a problem if I get dizzy spells? My neurologist has adjusted the flow in my shunt a few times, should I see him to adjust it again or just live with it, the dizzy spells are not everyday but every few days?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Dizziness may common in hydrocephalus. Possible causes for dizziness in hydrocephalus is
1.Stretching of central connections controlling the legs causes spasticity and difficult controlling leg motion.
2.Fluctuation of pressure in the spinal fluid can be transmitted to the inner ear.
3.Headache pain from hydrocephalus might trigger migraine associated vertigo. Treatment: managed with drugs like Acetazolamide or Vertine according to the pressure. If symptoms not improved you may need ventriculo peritoneal shunts.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
