Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My grandmother who has an indwelling catheter and recurrent UTIs has recently been prescribed gentamicin via bladder irrigation. After several days of receiving the antibiotic in this manner she began to have dry mouth and diarrhea. The RN at our family doctor s office told us that this couldn t be caused by the gentamicin because it was being injected directly into the bladder. Is this true or can my grandmother still be having side effects from this treatment?
Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you. No dry mouth and diarrhea are not side effects of gentamicin. She is probably having diarrhea due to some reason and the dry mouth is due to dehydration as a result of diarrhea. Give her enough fluids, electrolyte solution to keep her well hydrated. If the diarrhea is persistent, get a stool analysis done. I hope that answers your question. Regards, Dr.Ratnakar Kini
