My dear, welcome to HCM. An excess of stomach acid is not caused by a vitamin deficiency is the advice I would give to you if you were my patient. It can be caused by eating foods in the wrong combination, by obesity, by a hiatal hernia, stress, acidic foods or medication. It is generally treated by elevating the head of the be with an incline pillow at night, avoiding caffeine and gassey foods (i.e. cabbage, beans, lactose if lactose intolerant, broccoli, cauliflower) or by taking an over the counter acid reducer.
Folinext: only allowed in India , it is an irrational combination of nutrients . It does have folic acid in it which is beneficial, but not for your problem.

A patient of mine would be following an anti-reflux diet similar in guidelines as to what I have already given you. No citrus, no tight clothes, lose weight if overweight, no caffeine, do not eat 3 hours before bed, do not drink water with your food or get overfull, avoid fatty foods, monitor for lactose intolerance, avoid broccoli/cabbage/cauliflower. when eating beans or legumes soak for 2 hours or overnight, drain and fill with fresh water.

Get a 5 inch wedge pillow for your bed. Don't lie down after eating or drinking.

I hope these guidelines alleviate your discomfort from the "acidity". Sincerely,
Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN

Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

With the information you provided me I do not see why this physician gave you folinext. Folinext contains folic acid, methylcobalamine (B-12), alpha lipoic acid, vitamin B-1, and B-6. It is an irrational combination of several agents and is not allowed to be sold in any country except India. This medication is a vitamin, prescribed for anemia.

So, I do not see any lab tests to diagnose a folic acid or B12 deficiency and it is usually not advisable to take single forms of the B vitamins, the entire complex should be taken if an overall deficiency is suspected. If a B12 deficiency is identified by doing either a B12 or methymalonic blood test, then only B12 should be repleted unless folic acid was low as well then you treat with both B vitamins and not a B complex.

Before any treatment is administered there needs to be a complete assessment. The doctor did not assess for the condition for which you were prescribed a medication - Folinext - to treat symptoms only. I am not surprised to hear it is not helping you.

If you have problems with stomach acid, try avoiding spicy foods, citrus, eating before bed, avoid lactose (use lactaid if you drink more than 4 oz of milk at a time), try over the counter antacids, sleep on an incline pillow. Avoiding restrictive clothing, losing weight if overweight and avoiding eating too much at a sitting will all help you. Also, cutting down on fat, surprisingly, can ease your symptoms. Peppermint tea helps some.

Loose stool may be helped by increasing the fiber GRADUALLY (too quickly and you will get gas) up to 25 g per day along with 10 glasses of water (sip on it, do not overfill stomach).

If you keep having issues, write back. Regards, Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
