Is Having Steak Safe While Having High Potassium Levels?

Hello. My husband has PKD and is nearing renal failure. After having some recent lab work done, his doctor discovered that his potassium levels were so high that he is in danger of heart attack, stroke, or worse. His doctor recommended a low protein/low potassium diet. He is only allowed meat 3-4 times a week. I have been following this recommendation and have prepared many wonderful recipes, however, I cannot find any steak recipes and he is craving a grilled steak.
My question is... is steak completely out of the question, even in small portions? Does grilling make a difference?

Welcome to HCM,
3 ounces of beef is in the high potassium list of 320 mg. potassium. Grilling does not make a difference in the potassium content. When you say he is only allowed meat 3-4x per week, how much meat and from a certain list? How much potassium is he restricted to?

Your husband's situation is serious if he is nearing renal failure. I would not deviate one bit from the physician's instructions. And, if you haven't had a medical nutrition visit with a dietitian, I highly recommend one as they can spend more time with palatable menus that follow the doctor's diet order.

Sincerely, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
