Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is High Blood Pressure Despite Moderate Exercising A Cause For Concern?
I just got back from the doctor and my blood pressure was 140 over 82. It has been more like 127/29 over 72/74 for years. This is a recent development over the past couple of months. I have not been working out, or running as much as usual is the only thing I can think of. However, I am still regularly active. I go to the gym now about 2-4 days a week rather than 4-6. Should I be concerned about this?
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.
These one-time measured blood pressure figures do not indicate high blood pressure (hypertension). Blood pressure is normal 100-139/60-89 mmHg, and also it can fluctuate during a day, under physical engagement or psychological stress. Therefore, my opinion is that, at this moment, this is not hypertension and no further treatment is needed. Also, with age, there is also an increase of risk of having hypertension. I recommend you to resume your programme of exercise, as it was some time. A low-salt diet would also be appropriate. If you get constantly higher blood pressure figures than the ones I provided above in the future, then a 24-hour blood pressure monitor would be a good approach, to establish or exclude the diagnosis of hypertension.
I hope I was helpful. Take care.
Dr. Meriton
