Is Inducing Labour Necessary After Passing Only A Day After Due Date?
I am 40 weeks pregnant and had an appointment yesterday when I was advices to have my labor induced today. My due date was yesterday, November 6, but I wasn't told of any risks that I or baby have to be induced. I'm wondering if it is necessary as I am only 1 day passed my due date.
Hi If I were your doctor when you come for antenatal check up at 40 weeks I would check your blood pressure, random blood sugar and urine for protein. I would do an ultrasound to confirm that baby is fine. If ultrasound is normal and your tests are normal and you are experiencing normal baby movements then I would do an internal examination to assess whether pelvic cavity is adequate for the baby to pass during delivery. If all these are normal. I would allow you to wait for another week expecting spontaneous labour. At this time I would discuss with you and do sweeping of membranes. In this internal examination is done and gestational sac membranes are slightly separated from the cervix (neck of womb). This releases prostaglandins which help to start labour earlier. I would also ask you to do Non stress test daily to confirm that baby is doing fine.
If you don't deliver by 41 weeks I would admit you for induction of labour. I hope I have answered to your satisfaction.
