Is Intake Of Chloamphenicol Capsule 500mg Safe For A Pregnant Person?

my wife 8 months of pregnancy. she has fever and headache for this she visit the near by health center. they examine her and her blood tested . The clinician diagnosed she has typhoid fever for this he prescribe chloamphenicol capsule 500mg po Qid. Is the drug appropriate to her?

Hello and welcome,

The drug is a category C meaning that there is no proper human data to document adverse effects. However when the drug was used in late pregnancy it caused a peculiar syndrome in neonates called grey baby syndrome. So if possible it must be avoided in late pregnancy unless the benefits are more than risks.

Other drugs like cephalosporins are also active against salmonella [typhoid bacteria]. You may discuss this with your physician for further management.
