Is It Advisable To Consume Whey Protein While You Are Under Aged?

Hi I was just bought some whey protein shake mix and on the container it says "not suitable for people under 18" However, they instruct you to take 6 servings of it a day, i was wondering if i reduce the dosage significantly (because i am 16, 17 in june" can it still be harmful for me?

Hello and Welcome!
I have to say that I do not advise clients under 18 to take protein powders unless there is a medical condition involved. You can very easily increase your protein by diet. The minimum protein requirement is .8 g/kg body weight which varies upward according to the type of sport you are involved in.

However, consider that each ounce of cooked meat has about 7 grams of protein (so a double cheeseburger could have over 50 g protein), an 8 0z glass of milk has about 8 grams protein, one ounce slice of cheese has around 7 grams protein; vegies have about 3 grams protein per serving - I could go on and on. Even vegetarians can meet their protein requirements withous supplementation!

Another point to consider is the type of protein powder you get - there are additives that someone under 18 doesn't need in many of these retail products . . .Too much protein can be dehydrating.. .

Learning to eat like a competitive sports athletes may be a challenge, but it is worth the performance improvement. Supplements do not provide all the answers. Good luck to you and believe in yourself! Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
