Is It Best To Keep A Child Off From Sleeping On Stomach Due To Decorticate Posturing From Fall Until Neurologist Is Consulted?
My grandson just turned two. Since 3 months, after a serious fall, he has presented with decorticate posturing when he lays on his stomach and raises his head. His pediatrician said wait back then and now says it is time to see a neurologist. Question: In the meantime is it best to keep him from laying on his stomach /raised head which always brings on the posturing...or let him do it?
** 1. since pediatrician has asked to see neurologist, probably motor abnormalities of tone and reflexes were seen. 2. traumatic brain injury can cause decorticate posturing in children and for reasons that are poorly understood, but which may be related to high intracranial pressure, children with malaria frequently exhibit decorticate posturing. [make sure this pathology is ruled out] 3. Decorticate posturing indicates that there may be damage to areas including the cerebral hemispheres, the internal capsule, and the thalamus, so it is best to seek an opinion of Neurologist. 4. since decorticate has better prognosis than decerebrate posture, you can continue with the posture which he is adopting but seek immediate medical attention.
