Is It Easy To Contract HIV Infection After A Splenectomy?
My wife just recently had a splenectamy due to a trama. We where told that it is very easy for her to contract HIV because she has no spleen. First question is that true? and second question Would PREP work to help prevent catching HIV considering she xoesnt have a spleen?Thankypu
spleen is an important organ defending us against germs however its not very true for all germs . after spleen we are at high risk of infection but only a few organisms are really threat , for which generally people are vaccinated after splenectomy , HIV is not among those, so this is not the case the splenectomy significantly increase the risk if transmission of hiv ,however risk of hiv transmission is always there even if we have the spleen , so should always be taken seriously and best measure taken to avoid the chance POP are anti viral drugs that do not depend on spleen for action so PEP still can work well even if spleen is removed ,
