Is It Normal For My Urine To Darken And Develop A Strong Odor After Stopping Alprazolam, And Should I Be Concerned?

I am prescribed Alprazolam for treatment of Complex PTSD and when I take it my urine is clear/pale yellow, However when I stop, (currently stopped for over a month so far) my urine goes quite dark and strong odor. My question(s) is this, Is this normal, should I be concerned... What reasons could be possible causes (if any) and any recommendations?

Hello,

The odor of urine and color commonly changes due to dehydration. Take adequate amount of fluid and plenty of water. Take care of your hygiene, take regular bath. Certain medical issues can also cause brown urine. If your urine is dark and your skin or eyes look yellow, it’s a sign you may have a serious liver problem.

You are advised to get clinically examined by a Urologist. Get Urinalysis (R/E and C/S) along with blood tests done to detect any underlying liver problem, urinary tract infection, etc. Kidney disease or liver disease cause dark urine. Other medical conditions that cause brown urine are uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus, bladder infection, maple syrup disease, or a fistula in the urinary tract.

Certain food like beets, fava beans, blackberries, greens like rhubarb darken urine. Asparagus may give urine a strong odor. Keep yourself well hydrated and food that cause color change of urine are harmless & temporary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
