Is It Possible Rarely To Have Negative Results Until Months Into Pregnancy?

Here are my issues. I m 28. Never missed a period or had a late period. In the first week of May, my breasts became painfully tender. I was exhausted all of the time. Couldn t stop eating. I was sure I was pregnant as these are the same symptoms I had with both prior successful pregnancies. Only my period showed after getting countless neg tests. My period was 2 days late and 3 days shorter than usual. But it was not light or out of the ordinary. 5 days after my period ended, the breast pain, exhaustion, and never ending hunger is back. I dont have abdominal pain. I have very noticeable blue veins on both breasts that were never there before. I know this because I am very strict on monthly self breast exams. The veins on my breasts have only been noticeable when I was pregnant before. I can t even lightly touch my breasts without cringing. They have grown at least a cup size. None of my bras fit anymore. My abdomen is starting to either bloat or grow. It is now a week until my next period. Pregnancy tests are still neg. I am a nurse and even went as far as to walk to our lab and have a beta blood test done. Results were less than 1000. Negative. My doctor refuses to do an ultra sound because she thinks it is just stress or poor nutrition. I am not stressed and I eat very well and I m within my height/weight range. I didn t want or expect to be pregnant so I am not talking my body into this either. I am so confused. I keep reading about women that have negative tests until they are months into a pregnancy or those who don t know until they have an ultrasound. But my doctor won t explore any other options. So am I crazy or could this be a pregnancy?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

It is true that many women do not return a positive pregnancy result until even 3 months into pregnancy, but that does not necessarily mean this is common and this is the same as is your case.

As your doctor has also mentioned, there are various causes that can result in symptoms and a presentation like yours (eg. stress, uterine abnormalities, malnutrition, sudden loss of weight, birth control, contraception, infections, depression, etc.). If even one of these causes are present, then the symptoms you are experiencing could be because of that.

I would still recommend an ultrasound which should certainly help in ruling out/confirming pregnancy, and once ruled out we can concentrate on the cause for your presentation and address it adequately.

Please consult another doctor if this one is not ready to conduct an ultrasound.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
