Is It Possible To Conceive With The Left Follicle Size Of 1.20cm ?

Hi doctor, I m from Malaysia, and I m 28 this year. Started trying to conceive since February 2011. Successfully pregnant in April 2011. However, was diagnosed with partial molar pregnancy and had an evacuation of uterus in June 2011. In October 2011, my doctor said I can try to conceive again. This month (January 2012), I went for follicle scan. On CD10, right follicle was 1.21cm, left follicle was 0.78cm. On CD 14, right follicle disappeared while left follicle was 1.20cm. On CD17, left follicle was 1.41cm and there’s nothing on the right ovary. On CD 16 and CD 17, I got positive on my OPK tests. I am also charting my basal body temperature and from the chart, I can see that I ovulated on CD17. I have egg white cervical mucus since CD 14 until CD18. I have a 30 day cycle and have regular period. My doctor told me that it s unlike that I ll have an egg this month because my follicle is so small and my left follicle grew so slow (grew only 2mm from CD14 to CD17). However, I just got a positive pregnancy test at home on my CD28. So I m worried now. My doctor told me the reason for the small follicle could be the egg is not growing healthily. So, Will a 14mm follicle rupture and release a viable egg? Does it mean that I ll likely miscarry since it s an unhealthy egg? And if my pregnancy can continue, does it mean that my baby is likely to be abnormal since the egg is unhealthy?

Hi, I have gone through your question. I would suggest you to not to worry as the prognosis of the fetus and pregnancy does not depend on the size of Ovum or the egg, rather it depends on the genetic composition of the egg and it cannot be determined.
Chromosomal anomalies lead to first trimester miscarriages and congenital anomalies and these cannot be detected so early in pregnancy.
A 14 mm follicle can also release a healthy egg.
I would suggest you to get an ultrasound done at least 2 weeks after your missed periods to assess the fetal growth and viability.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Dr Deepti Verma
