Is It Possible To Take Flight With Frequent Headaches And Vomiting?

Hello,My son is 21 years old and is frequently having problems with migraine-type headaches that get so bad it causes uncontrollable vomiting. Then there is a very loud popping noise in his upper nose area (so loud others in the room hear it) and the pain and pressure instantly goes and he feels much better. Is this a serious condition that needs immediate attention? The sudden onset of the headaches and vomiting is becoming a real problem as it can happen anywhere and anytime. Just this past week it happened on a bus and he vomited on the bus.He is also due for a long haul flight (24 hrs) around Sept and I am worried that the cabin pressure could be a serious problem if he doesn t get this issue looked at.Thanks, Diana

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

I agree that anyone with severe headaches as you describe with vegetative symptoms should be looked at as soon as possible.

I recommend you have your son see either a neurologist or a headache specialist in order to be examined and treated in anticipation of his airline plans in the near future.

Barometric headaches are believed to occur on the basis of small changes in atmospheric pressure. Certainly this can be a problem when flying on commercial aircraft.

An examination would also allow the physician the opportunity to obtain imaging studies of the brain as dictated by the history and physical examination in case there was a chance that his headaches were due to an intracranial anomaly such as a small berry aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi,
Neurologist
