Hi we are going to the amazon for 3 days and have been recommended to take malerone for malaria. However we think we may be pregnant as we have been trying the last few weeks so I don't want to take malerone in case. Do u know how bad the effects of malerone on a foetus can be if both my husband and I decide to take it? Cheers
Hi, Thanks for the query. Malerone contains atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride. It belongs to category C drugs in pregnancy according to FDA. Means animal studies have shown possible adverse effects on fetus. But sufficient human studies are lacking. So, this drug can be taken when the benefits overweigh the risks. You discuss this with your doctor and follow her advice. If she recommends you can go for the tablets. Start taking folic acid prophylaxis from nowonwards. If you miss your expected date of periods, go for pregnancy test once. Take care.
