Is It Safe To Consume NAC 500mg Tablet Multiple Times In A Day?

My friend is taking 500mg of NAC tablets 9 times a day for a month now. She thinks that will lighten her skin color (this has been circulating around in India). Now she is turning yellow. So she stopped. What are the long term effects of what she has done to her body ?

Hello,

Acetylcysteine (N-Acetylcysteine)/NAC has been used in Melasma for bleaching action as only topical application of a combination of 4.7% n-acetylcysteine and 2% hydroquinone.

Any oral form is not recommended for lightening of the skin. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) has following side effects-CVS: Tachycardia; hypotension; hypertension; chest tightness. RESP: Bronchospasm; bronchial irritation.

CNS: Drowsiness. EENT: Rhinorrhea. GI: Nausea; vomiting; stomatitis. DERM: Rash; pruritis; angioedema. OTHER: Fever; clamminess.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
