Is It Safe To Give Metronidazole For 3month Old Due To Diarrhea?

My 3 month old baby is suffering from diarrhea, some with mucoidal consiistency and blood streak but stool analysis showed that ameoba was negative. Still the doctor prescribed Metronidazole 2.3 ml thrice a day. Is it safe to give my 3 month old baby Metronidazole?

Stool culture /sensitivity to be done get the exact bug involved. And accordingly child to be given GIT specific antibiotics to get the response.
Metronidazole may not be required.
