Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an 6 yr old nephew with ALL (leukemia) they have 4 dogs. people tell them not to have pets and they said the doctor only said cats. They also have 4 other kids and a live in nanny. We are afraid for his health. Can you advise me what to tell them.
This depends on his treatment status. If chemotherapy is completed, not on any immuno-suppressants now, and he is in remission, we need not worry. They have to keep the dog healthy and vaccinated with regular visits to vet. Otherwise, it is better to keep pets away, as both the disease and the treatment causes immuno-suppression and risk of contracting infection.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
