Is It Safe To Have Sex During Intercourse?

Hi. I'm 21 years old. My height's about 5'7" and my weight was 51 kgs in May 2011. I had Root Canal Treatment last year in June. I would like to know if it's safe to have sex during my period (using a male condom) as I want to avoid any chance of getting pregnant? Is there any chance of the condom being torn apart during penetration?
