Is It Safe To Leave Piece Of Tooth In The Mouth?
I am a 55 year old male.I had a broken tooth which became loose.The dentist
removed most but could not get it all as remaing piece was close to bone and
tight.He said I would have to see an oral surgeon to complete the job.My
question is if I elect to leave remaining piece attatched will this cause any
health issues?

Leaving a piece of tooth inside the socket is a tricky prospect and it all depends upon the call of the treating Dentist to leave it like that or call an oral surgeon to remove it.
If you leave it like that then there are chances that it may get infected and cause problems in near future. Hence, always advisable to take it all out.

The root piece can be left there only if it is in approximation with some important anatomical structures like maxillary sinus or inferior alveolar nerve canal or if the tooth is not infected, we can leave it there. If there is accessibility and visibility, then the root piece can be removed. If the size of the root piece is less than 3 mm then it can be left, usually it will get resorbed by its own. Consult a oral and maxillofacial surgeon and get a radiograph done and take an opinion.
