Is It Safe To Smoke Marijuana After An Endoscopy?

Hi, I had an endoscopy this am and I am wondering if it’s ok to smoke weed now. It helps with nausea and it would be helpful if I could. I feel fine other than that. I understand the anesthesia may intensify the weed but I have no plans of leaving bed. Thanks in advance!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Anaesthesia wears off rapidly and by the time you are awake to write this, it must be worn off. There can be other sedatives that last longer like morphine but they do not interact all that much with cannabis. So, by the time you can write it, the psychoactive and sedative effects are safe. However, there is a possibility of lung reaction with cannabis, that is a bit of a problem and a bit more of one if there is residual lung irritation after the endoscopy. Most likely if there are not symptoms of lung irritation noticeable, the effect of cannabis will be small.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
