General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Smoking in pregnancy has various health hazards in pregnancy like high blood pressure/respiratory problems in mother. smoking in first 12 weeks of pregnancy, puts the baby to risk of birth defects pertaining to heart. Premature delivery, unexplained fetal loss are possible hazards of smoking. Defects in brain developments/intelligence are other grave effects on baby, So it is better to leave smoking as early as possible in pregnancy. And if people can't quit smoking- they should avoid pregnancy & adopt a baby- rather than getting sorrowful experiences or giving a miserable life to the baby after birth. Thanks.
