Is It Safe To Take Mucinex DM While On Zoloft, Lamotrigine, Buspirone And Vistaril?

i had my ears flushed, to remove impacted wax. my doctor suggested flonase and mucinex d (she specified the d ) and said no anti-histamine, i m assuming because i m on Zoloft, Lamotrigene, Buspirone, and Vistaril. but all i can find OTC (which she said it would be) is Mucinex DM. is that safe to take or should i look for Mucinex D?

Hi,

It is important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking any new medications, including over-the-counter medications, especially if you are taking multiple prescription medications.

Mucinex DM contains two active ingredients: guaifenesin and dextromethorphan. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps to thin mucus and make it easier to cough up, while dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. These ingredients are generally considered safe to use with antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and anticonvulsants like Zoloft, Lamotrigine, Buspirone, and Vistaril.

However, it is important to note that Mucinex DM can cause drowsiness and dizziness, especially when taken with other medications that have similar side effects, such as Vistaril. It is also possible that Mucinex DM could interact with one or more of your prescription medications, potentially leading to adverse effects.

Therefore, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking Mucinex DM, even if it is available over the counter. They can guide whether this medication is safe for you to use and how it may interact with your current medication regimen. If Mucinex D is not available, your healthcare provider can recommend an alternative medication that is safe for you to use.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
