Is It Safe To Take Rx Levothyroxine With Normal Thyroid Function?
I need your advice. I recently had a TSH and T4 FREE test and my results are TSH 1.74 and T4 FREE 0.9. I have a Thyroid mass size 3.7 cm. I had a fine needle biopsy and my results were benign. I saw a specialist and he Rx LEVOTHYROXINE 100 mcg I time a day. He said he want to see if the medication shrinks the mass. is it safe to take the medication even if my Thyroid function test was with in normal levels?
Hello, Thanks for posting in HCM. As he told you that he wants to see whether the mass shrinks in size or not, it means that he thinks that it could be goiterogenic swelling occuring due to iodine deficiency or overall thyroxine deficiency. In developing goiter it is possible that thyroid study will in normal range as it has not reached the level of critical low level after which the thyroid study will not be normal and values will go abnormal. So as advised kindly take the prescribed meds for specified amount of time and then repeat a scan and thyroid study to see for changes. If the size shrinks it will confirm diagnosis and it will helpful for you only. Yes it is safe to take but make sure you get a follow up check within 1 month of starting the meds. I hope i have answered your query well. Thank you
