Is It Safe To Take Valacyclovir As Post Exposure Prophylaxis?

Hi, my long-time partner is HSV-1+ and I am HSV-negative per antibody test results. He has a new oral outbreak as of just now and we were kissing earlier today. Can I take valacyclovir as post-exposure prophylaxis, and if so, at what dosage and for how long?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Active episode of oral Hsv Or herpes labialis really does increase chances of transmitting the infection to you.
Valacyclovir is mainly for treatment of active episodes of herpes as well as suppressive treatment for recurrent herpes sores in those who already have it, however, it is not a preventive treatment for herpes.
I suggest you to get tested with a blood test for antibodies against herpes once again, at 2 weeks after this contact, to ascertain whether you have acquired the infection or not.
Moreover, if you notice or develop any bumps or sores on or around the labial mucosa you must get yourself checked with a dermatologist.

Regards
