Hello. Thank you for writing to us

She has been asked to take Oral isotretinoin, which is an excellent antiacne medication. It is US FDA approved for severe acne Or acne that is associated with scaring.
It is a derivative of Vitamin A and has a multi-pronged mechanism of action in acne and oily skin conditions.
It is anti-inflammatory, comedolytic and sebostatic i.e inhibits oil production.
The duration of treatment is usually 4-6 months or even longer and some patients may require repeat courses as well.
Side effects are minor and mostly include dryness and chapping of lips. She may use a lip guard to counter that.
The most important side effect of Oral isotretinoin that should be considered in females is that it is teratogenic in pregnancy and therefore should be avoided in pregnant females and those females who could get pregnant while on treatment.
However, considering the fact that she is only 16 years of age, there is no risk on that count in her.

Regards
