Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi,My son, 13 years old is running high temperature (102 deg F - 103 deg F) due to viral infection for the past 24+ hrs. Calpol 500 mg was administered 3 times and Dolo 650 mg 2 times but fever did not subside. My doctor advised Meftal 500 (max 2 times a day) if the fever didn t subside even after Calpol 500 mg administered every 4 hrs and he was given water mopping. I gave my son 1 tablet of Meftal 500 mg and temperature seems to have come down. But when I read about the drug it is actually administered for body pain, tooth ache etc and not for controlling high temperature. Is this course of treatment right?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Calpol and dolo are both paracetamol. The difference is dolo has just 150 mg more. Meftal (mefenamic acid) is effective in reducing fever as well as a pain killer. In viral fevers it should be given with caution as hemorrhagic fevers this can be a problem. Meftal may further decrease platelet count and increase bleeding tendency in viral hemorrhagic fevers. So it should be taken with your doctors advise. Taking more fluids and tepid sponging will be helpful in reducing fever. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
