Is It Serious To Hear A Crunching Sound In The Knee Of A 20 Yr Old While Kneeling?
Earlier today i was kneeling on the ground with both knees near my entertainment stand to do some quick work on my computer, when i relaxed my weight and bent my knees all the way, my right knee crunched very loud, this has never happened before, i am a 20 year old male. I got up for a second and did it again to make sure i wasnt going crazy and it happened every single time i bent my knee as far as i could, i called my gf downstairs to see if she could hear it and she could and it grossed her out. What could this be? like i said i am 20 years old and i have lived a very active life up until now, so i am hoping to rule out osteoarthritis, but im hoping its not something more serious.
Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. I do not think we have any reasons to worry. Sometimes as a normal phenomena, fluid (synovial fluid) that lubricate the joint release bubbles which pop and crackle with movement. This occurs very commonly after a period of inactivity or during certain movements. I am not sure if this is what you have, but this is my most likely explanation to your symptoms. You don't need to worry if there is no associated joint pain; but you have to do some conditioning exercises to improve the overall integrity of the joint - stronger muscle will take the weight of the joint and help to reduce the pressure on articulating surfaces, thus preventing any damage to the joint. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care

General & Family Physician, Dr. Ramprabhu's Response
Thanks for query.Popping, crunching and snapping within the knee is common, and often not a symptom of any particular problem. When the pops are painless, there is usually no problem, but painful pops and snaps should be evaluated.need not worry much until they don't bother you .
