Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi,,,my husband is being diognised with TB in the lymph node .He is being given AKT - 4 medicine .can u tell me is it the right medicine and what are its side effects.his dose started from today and so far he hadnt had any side effects.what kind of diet should he eat.
Yes definitely he is receiving the proper treatment & my advice is that he should be properly adherent to the treatment regimens as the TB is best disease to be cured by proper medications. AKT 4 contains four drugs rifampicine, isoniazide, pyrazinamide & ethambutol.
Most common side effect of the medication is that it produces the reddish coloured urine, which the patients feels as if having blood in urine. But nothing to worry about it its not the blood but the drug induced discoloration. Second common side effect of the drugs is acidity & drug induced gastritis for which the antacids are usually prescribed will take care of it.
Few of he AKT drugs may be produce liver & renal toxicity but these are rare side effects & usually not caused by the clinically prescribed the doses. Only thing that should be kept in mind is to keep watch on development of jaundice otherwise get liver function & renal function checked after 3 months of treatment to be sure. Peripheral neuropathy may be caused by Isoniazide, to avoid this usaly Tab Pyridoxine is prescribed with AKT 4.
Adherence to therapy is most important Failing which may lead to drug resistant TB.
