Is It To Be Concerned About The Cut In The Thumb Of A Child?
my 4 year old son got a hold of a box knife and cut his left thumb just above the big knuckle. it is on the underside of his thumb and towards the outside of the thumb. it looks to be a deep cut, and i applied pressure to it and held it under cold water until it stopped bleeding. now there is a blue coloring (like a vein) from the cut across his thumb and disappears into his palm, he says it doesnt hurt unless you press on it, when you do it bleeds a little, but stops. i cleaned it good with peroxide, and put triple antibiotic ointment on it and put band aids on it to help. he is now on the couch sleeping, with it proped up. will my son be ok? or should i get him seen asap?
Good day! thank you for choosing healthcare magic!
Its good that you were able to clean it very well. Is your child's vaccination updated? If not your child needs to get a tetanus shot for deep wounds like this. How is the bleeding now? Once the bleeding has lessened or stopped, you'll be able to see clearly how deep the wound is. If it is really deep, sometimes suture is needed as well as oral antibiotics. But most often for small cuts, it will heal on its own. You just have to keep it clean all the time and apply the antibiotic ointment on it.
