Is It True That Condoms Do Not Guarantee Hundred Percent Protection From STD During Intercourse?

In my school, I had a presentation about STDs and the serious effects of them and how to prevent them. The presenter said that condoms do not guarantee 100% protection from STDs, is that true? Also should I get tested for STDs before becoming sexually active?

Hello,

Correct use of good quality condoms do reduce the risk of STD and HIV transmission but it cannot give absolute protection. STD is often asymptomatic and hence people may be unaware and it may get transmitted. Always use good quality condoms. Yes, its true that condoms do not give 100% protection from STD during intercourse.

It is a good idea for both the partners to do STD test before becoming sexually active. The best way to stay protected against STD is to have sex with only one female partner who is not infected. Beware STD is also transmitted by skin-to-skin contact like genital herpes, human papillomavirus [HPV] infection, syphilis, and chancroid). To stay protected go for vaginal sex, avoid other type of sex. Avoid multiple partners. Use good quality condom consistently and correctly.

Condoms should have a reservoir tip for semen to collect. If not buy a new pack. Improper use may cause tearing of condom, if condom breaks at any point during sexual activity, stop immediately, withdraw, remove the broken condom, and put on a new condom. Always withdraw your penis carefully holding the condom after the sexual act as the penis becomes flaccid or sperms may spill. Always use a new condom for each sexual intercourse.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
