Is Laser Surgery Recommended For A Persistent Lump In The Arm Pit?
I recently got an abcess under my armpit. I had a small nodule from about a year ago that never went away from previous outbreak of abcess. This time it inflamed and grew larger with another smaller lump directly under it. I was prescribed bacterium DS and the pain and inflammation went away after the antibiotics was completed. The problem is I still have the lump under neath skin and slight pain with touch. No redness or draining but it can be uncomfortable to touch. Will this ever go away? The lump? The doctor recommended I should have laser surgery, says the ingrown hair is culprit.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
A lump persisting for 1 year after bacterial infection can possibly be a sebaceous cyst. A sebaceous cyst can get repeatedly infected with bacteria. Ingrown hair is a possibility when shaving is a factor. However, it is unusual for an ingrown hair to persist for 1 year. Axilla normally is resident to lot of bacteria. Moreover sweating and friction are factors that would also favor bacterial infection. I would recommend that you get it surgically removed because if indeed it is a sebaceous cyst, it is likely that you could will have another bout of secondary infection. Treatment is simple excision of the cyst along with the cyst wall, under local anesthesia. You may contact either a dermatologist or a general surgeon for confirmatory diagnosis and for the needful.
