Is Microbid Advised For Patients With Blood In Urine?
Dear Dr.'s: Due to considerable bladder pain, I recently submitted a urine specimen that was negative for bacteria but trace amounts of blood were found. I was prescribed microbid but due to 2 bouts of Cdiff in the last 4 years I am reluctant to take it...especially considering there was no bacteria present. May I ask for an opinion on this and would you advise that I see a urologist? Thank you
You're correct not to take macrobid if there was no bacteria found. With a bit of blood and no bacteria, no leukocyte esterase or nitrates, I'd agree that you see a urologist and hold off on antibiotics for now. I'd make sure that you follow up on the urine culture (hopefully your doctor sent one off), just to make sure that there truly weren't any bacteria.
You may be suffering from interstitial cystitis, which is inflammation of the bladder without infection, and would explain your symptoms and blood in the urine. Consultation with a urologist is the best course of action here.
I hope I have answered your questions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or if you feel I haven't addressed your question adequately.
