Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I was just told my son has an absolute neutrophil count of 3,700. He s 13 months old. The doctor said he has neutropedia and sounded very concerened. She told me not to leave the house with him until I get his blood work done on Tuesday (3 days from now). I am beside myself with worry. Does she really have cause to tell me that my son could die (her words exactly) if he gets any kind of sickness right now?
Neutropenia is a decrease in the absolute neutrophil count. The most common cause could be a viral infection which suppresses the neutrophil production. However they start rising soon after the infection is gone. However other ominous causes of Neutropenia are also there like aplasia of the bone marrow, some forms of aleukemic leukemia etc. A Neutropenic patient runs a risk of being increasingly prone to bacterial infections. However it could be a transient phase and come to normal soon. Please check with the report, because according to my reference ranges your child's neutrophil count is appropriate for age
