Is Open Heart Surgery Required For Aortic Valve Replacement?
My dad is 90 yrs old. The doctor says he need an aorta valve to be replaced and bypass for his main artery. He is in excellent physical shape. The doctor has suggested open heart surgery. Should I get another opinion ? He stated the risk is approx. 5%. Your opinion ?
It is clear that aoric valve replacement with bypass surgery at age of 90 carries very high risk.I need to know your coronary angio report to see if blocks in the artery are suitable for angioplasty or not?If they are suitable for angioplasty then you may consider TAVI,a nonsurgical technique of aortic valve replacementand angioplasty for blocks in coronaries.PTCA and Tavi can be offered to him and this carries minimal risk.please discuss with your doctor.
Usually in patients with advanced age transcatheter aortic valve replacement(TAVI) is prefered. But in case of low risks your surgeon can prefer open heart surgery.
Hope I could help you
Wishing you good health
