Is Packing Supposed To Be Left Inside After Hemorrhoidectomy And Sphincterectomy?

I had a hemorrhoidectomy and internal lateral sphincterectomy done on Tuesday. I had been in severe pain and felt like I had a plug in my anus, unable to even pass gas. This morning at 4 am I finally sat on the toilet until I passed something. I called my doctor and she said it was packing. I am wondering if packing is supposed to be left inside of me and if I should be worried that there may be more inside. I have not had a bowel movement yet. My doctor says all is normal, but I feel like they are covering their butts! Sincerely, Jennifer

Hi,

I noted your history of hemorrhoidectomy and internal sphincterotomy on Tuesday. You felt blockage, passed a pack on straining, you want to know whether this was right or wrong. In all the cases of hemorrhoidectomy and internal sphincterotomy a pack has to be kept to control the reactionary bleeding but there are strict instruction that there is a pack that is kept and you have to take a sitz bath in a tub with warm water and to remove it after proper soaking.

If not possible, get it removed by assistance of a Nurse. It is usually a single pack, never two or more as a standard practice, hence do not worry. Have sitz bath, take the medications properly and you will be fine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
