my husband is 46 hes been a long term hard liqour alcoholic. he began to stop eating and then lost a lot of weight. he was already hospitalized 2 times for pancreitis and continues to drink at least a fith of vodka a day. 65 days ago he woke up from sleeping and had bruieses all over his arm and they were not there when he went to sleep. i took him to the hospital and hes been in intensive care since he might be able to come home tommorrow or the following day. the doctor said he had alcohol poising, and pancreitis again and now cerosis. my questions are if he still drinks how long will he live and can i catch it? is it contagious he already has jaundice to.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Pancreatitis is a life threatening disease and repeated attacks makes his pancreas much weaker and chances of complications are very high. The best and only treatment is to avoid alcohol completely. Once the acute attack subsided he can continue normal life. It is not at all a contagious disease and you will not get it.
Wishing all the best.
Thanks.
